A very nice DVD collection (single slip case) of Gay/Britten’s The Beggar’s Opera, together with a double DVD of The Threepenny Opera (German and French alternative versions) directed by the legendary G.W. Pabst, the Austrian film director.

The Beggar’s Opera: Roger Jerome as The Beggar and Janet Baker as Polly Peachum. As it was acted at the Theatre Royal, Lincoln’s Inn Fields in 1728. Originally broadcast 1963. 94 minutes. Published 2009 by Decca.

Die Dreigroschenoper – The Threepenny Opera, a 1931 musical film directed by G W Pabst. BFI.

L’Opera d Quat’Sous – the French language version of the Threepenny Opera again directed by G W Pabst. There are some variations of plot details as in the title -four penny opera! BFI.

Interestingly, the French version of The Threepenny Opera is around 10 minutes shorter due to French being more fleet of foot in its delivery!
